Pair crashes after reinstall

Lex Jun 09, 2012 04:57AM PDT

Hey guys,

let me start by saying I really like Pair! I use it a lot with my girlfriend and really like your approach (I do have some feedback, but that's for another moment). I even made it to my iPhone Dock. Unfortunately I'm having trouble with Pair…

A few days ago I was using Pair and it had been really slow and buggy for a while, so I thought I could remove, reinstall, login and just continue using it. So I did. But after the login Pair seems to be loading (with a white screen http://l.postma.me/H28m) for a while and then crashes. This happens every time I try it.

Is this a bug? Can you guys help me?

Thank you!
Sincerely, Lex

I'm came here because I'm seeing the exact same thing. I've had to use the app on my Android phone instead since it seems to be able to load in the old data fine there, but that means we can't use emoji (and the android version is in general a lot buggier in other ways)

In short, yes; there are a number of reoasns as to why one may not receive a push notification. If you are on an iPod Touch with a WiFi connection the device will only connect to the Apple Push Notification cloud every 30 minutes. Because this is a socketed network connection (think of that like holding a phone call open between two people) the time delay is there to conserve battery life. It can be significantly improved if the device is plugged into power, the connection can then be held and messaging is very quick (seconds to a few minutes).iPhone connections fair much better as they use a combination of the cellular network connection. I am also convinced devices that are sleeping are always connected either. Some have commented on poor battery life with push enabled; I am not so sure.Messages are only held by the notification system and retried for a short period of time. Sorry, I don't know what this is, I have not seen any specific times from Apple on this. Likely due to the fact it would be a way to manage load. Messages sent after one notification (that has not been delivered) will also overwrite the one(s) waiting to be delivered.I have no way of actually querying the delivery queue, from my side it's a black box I deliver the message (binary stream) and the APNS (Apple Push Notification Service) takes it from there. This is quite frustrating, unlike many other message queueing systems like IBM MQ, MSMQ and popular open source Java ones there's no tool set to get a view into what is happening or has happened to any message. I sent 25,000 today alone; I can't tell you if everyone got delivered, but I think nearly all that could have been delivered were. Now to my last point; in the networking game the acronym QoS' gets thrown around a lot Quality of Service. There is NO guarantee that any message will ever get delivered, there is no Quality of Service statement. This is why I didn't charge for the update to version 4.0, how could I charge for something where I couldn't even say 70% of the time it will work . APNS is not SMS.I may sound a bit negative on Apples service, I don't mean to be, what they have done with the iPhone and push services is a technological feat of engineering software development. Such is life at the leading edge.
